![]() Comment: Back in the 18th century gambling really had a bad reputation, because people were actually religious, and according to the Bible true Christians (who are actually religious, not just say so, like today) must not participate in any sort of game of chance. The first form of officially legal gambling on the territory of modern day Mexico (back then New Spain) was the Royal General Lottery, which donated most of its profits to charity, and it operated the New Spain’s Hospice for the Poor (which was a huge homeless shelter, house of the poor, free clinic and home for the disabled all in one). ![]() 1771: The first written form of gambling predates the independence of Mexico (1821).
